The best-selling car in America has once again been given a redesign. This time around, reliable and comfortable are not enough for Toyota and they've done their best to inject some excitement into a car that's become a workhorse for American families. The biggest change is obviously the styling. While the previous Camry did its part to look less anonymous than the ones that preceded it, it still wasn't what anyone would call particularly sporty. The new 2018 Camry has a bold, aggressive front end design and taillights that evoke some of the sportier offerings from Toyota's sister company, Lexus. The powertrains have also been given a redesign and the new Camry is likely the fastest one yet.
The 2018 Camry comes with a choice of two different engines available in three drivetrain configurations: 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and 4-cylinder hybrid. The base 2.5L 4-cylinder powerplant does its job quietly and efficiently while providing 206 horsepower. Thusly equipped, the 2018 camry is rated at 29 mpg in the city and an astonishing 41 mpg on the highway. The EPA has not released estimates for the hybrid version of the Camry (which utilizes a less powerful version of the same engine, supplemented by electric motors) but expect it to be even better.
A more powerful V6 engine is also available for those who want faster acceleration and effortless passing power. The 3.5L unit powering the previous generation has been worked over and now produces 301 horsepower. For both non-hybrid engines, power is sent to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The Camry is available in five basic trims, L, LE, SE, XLE and XSE. All trims can be had with the base 4-cylinder engine, while the XLE and XSE can also be optioned with the V6. The base L trim comes standard with Toyota's Entune system which connects with phones to stream music or use apps such as a GPS link. Other standard features on the L include a backup camera, Bi-LED headlights, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, LED daytime running lights, remote keyless entry and Toyota's Safety Sense Plus suite of safety features and systems. LE models add 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-way power adjustable driver's seat and a 60/40 split rear folding seat.
The SE looks a bit meaner than other Camry models thanks to 18-inch machine finished alloy wheels, a blacked out front grill, chrome exhaust tips, a rear spoiler and embossed mesh interior trim. The SE also includes automatic climate control, a leather shift knob and steering wheel and Toyota's SofTex trimmed front seats.
The XLE includes a bigger 7-inch multi-information display, dynamic radar controlled cruise control, a blind spot warning system, LED headlights, LED taillights, 18-inch wheels (a different design than the ones on the SE) wood interior trim, a metallic front grill, 3 USB ports, heated front seats and leather seating surfaces.
Top of the line XSE models come with fancy, slightly tinted LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, 19-inch machine finish alloy wheels, textured metal interior trim, a gloss black front grill and a sport tuned suspension system.
